Low milk supply could be caused by mainly 2 reasons;

  • Medical conditions or anatomical issues in the mother or baby
  • Non-Medical conditions (lifestyle and breastfeeding practices)

The thing is:

95% of Low Milk Supply issues are due to non-medical conditions and can easily be reversed by following simple yet effective methods that I will get into in this blog.

For those cases where your milk supply is low because of medical conditions in either the mother or baby, you need to seek help from your Doctor.

The most important thing to understand is that for most women, low breast milk supply is a short-term problem

… and can easily get fixed by changing a few things and trying to do things slightly differently.

I have listed the top ways to increase your milk supply. All you need to do is, be patient and follow the instructions consistently and you will see results in just a few days.

How to Increase Milk Supply

1. Liquids… Liquids… and More Liquids

To increase breast milk production, you need to drink lots of liquids. The more liquids you drink, the more milk will be able to produce.

It is recommended to drink at least 13 glasses of liquids per day.

Most moms like taking water because it does not have any additives or any calories. Alternatively, there are mothers who recommend the use of Powerade and Gatorade because they have electrolytes.

Note: Be sure to not drink a lot of sodas, or other caffeinated drinks because they could potentially get into the breast milk and affect your baby.

2. On-Demand Nursing

Your body automatically adjusts the amount of breast milk to produce based on the number of times your baby needs to feed.

In order to increase your milk supply, you need to try your best to feed your baby whenever she needs feeding.

Don’t create a feeding schedule for your baby at least until your milk supply has leveled out. Even if you feel like you are not producing enough breast milk, just keep on latching your baby whenever she seems like she is hungry and be sure to feed her on both sides each time.

While nursing, you can trigger your body to produce more milk by skin to skin contact. This process helps to maintain physiological stability, stabilize body temperature, increase blood oxygenation levels and regulate respiration. This is a calming exercise that will benefit both the mother and the child.

3. Check your latch

You may find out that your latch is the problem and not necessarily your milk supply.

This is something that I needed to adjust and with the help of a lactation consultant.

I learned that newborns have a reflex; once they smell breastmilk they will sniff their way to find it…

Its’ called the breast crawl, but sometimes they need help latching properly and not just latching onto the nipple…..because ouch!!

In a normal latch, the breast AND nipple usually go into the baby’s mouth. Try to place the nipple at cupid’s bow between baby’s nose and upper lip and drag it down to baby’s lower lip.

The smell along with the motion will help activate that reflex of opening the mouth wide enough to get a great latch. The gums of the baby compress the sinuses that are located one inch behind the nipple.

Getting the latch right is a big part of increasing milk supply, this will help your body know it’s time to create more milk. It will also help prevent things such as sore nipples and clogged ducts.

4. Breast massage

Try massaging your breasts at least once a day.

Massaging your breasts will clear your milk ducts, stimulate blood flow and let more milk flow freely resulting in an increase in milk production.

How to properly massage your breasts?

  1. Apply Coconut oil or lotion on your hands
  2. Gently rub and squeeze your lymph glands in your armpits
  3. Do that for a few minutes at a time and avoid using extra force

5. Pump frequently

You might not always be in a position to breastfeed your baby as frequently as you would want to.

Why not try pumping instead?

Pumping triggers your body to produce milk similar to how your baby’s sucking does. The more you pump, the more your body will try to produce more milk.

It is recommended to start off pumping at least 10-12 times a day until your milk supply stabilizes. That number sounds intimidating but think of it as the time baby feeds every two or so hours.

Try to start for just a few minutes after each feed just to help send those signals to your body.

In order to pump, you need some sort of breast pump.

But, the thing is:

NOT all breast pumps are equal.

There are some breast pumps that get the job done, while others are very slow and weak, causing a lot of wasted time and frustration.

6. Power pumping

Power pumping is another great way to boost your milk fast.

But what exactly is power pumping? and how can you do it?

Power pumping involves pumping milk multiple times in a short time. By doing this, it tricks your body into believing that there is a high demand for milk, and it will try to meet that demand by producing more milk fast.

Here is how you should power pump for the best results:

  1. Pump for 20 minutes then rest for 10 minutes
  2. Pump for another 10 minutes then rest for 10 minutes
  3. Finally, pump for the last 10 minutes. (source)

After doing that for a couple of days you should see serious improvements in the amount of milk you are producing.

Just be sure to use a good Breast pump when power pumping, otherwise it might take much longer to get your desired results.

7. Manage stress

It is completely normal for mothers of newborns to get stressed out.

Especially because of lack of sleep and dealing with a lot of change in a short time and it does not help when you are not producing enough milk for your baby.

The problem is:

Stress only does harm to your milk supply by blocking the letdown reflex.

Your little one can sense your tension and sometimes that makes breastfeeding harder. Do your best manage stress as much as possible with these actionable techniques:

  • Take deep breaths
  • Take some time to focus on yourself
  • Meditate
  • Treat yourself
  • Talk to someone and seek help

After reducing some of the tension and following the other tips, you will surely see an increase in your milk supply.

But most importantly, you will be a lot more relaxed and will enjoy time with your little one a bit more.

8. Rest

I can bet that you have not been getting some solid sleep lately.

But, you should try your best to maximize the amount of sleep you get.

The more rest your body gets, the more relaxed you will be and that will result in a natural rise in milk supply; a small excuse to throw on those PJ’s ASAP!

9. Change or get off birth control pills.

It is common for women to report low milk supply, especially when taking birth control pills.

But not all forms of birth control affect milk production:

According to research, estrogen-containing birth control products such as oral contraceptives, vaginal rings (i.e NuvaRing) and transdermal patches (Climara) may have a negative effect breast milk production (source).

Alternatively, Progesterone only pills are preferred as they are less likely to decrease milk supply.

Bottom Line:

Seek guidance from your Doctor about your birth control options to make sure it is not affecting your milk supply.

10. Eat Healthy Foods

Your body needs food to create energy to produce breast milk.

Examples of some proven go-to foods to include on your next grocery trip:

  • Salmon
  • Low-Fat Dairy Products
  • Lean Beef
  • Legumes
  • Blueberries
  • Brown Rice
  • Oranges
  • Eggs
  • Whole-Wheat Bread
  • Leafy Greens
  • Whole-Grain Cereal
